Emma Mashinini (1929-2017) grew up in Sophiatown. She was an active member of the African National Congress. She served for 12 years on the executive board of the National Union of Clothing Workers, was the first General Secretary of the Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union, and involved in the formation of the Congress of South African Trade Unions. She was arrested in 1981 and held in solitary confinement at Pretoria Central Prison for six months. In 1986 she was appointed head of the Department of Justice and Reconciliation and then as the Commissioner for Land Restitution.
