Mavimbela is a social worker at the SA National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence in George, Eastern Cape. He was born in Port St Johns, and is currently reading for a PhD in anthropology at Nelson Mandela University. Mavimbela has published five isiXhosa books and has won the Via Afrika award for African Language Creative Writing, the South African Literary Award in the Creative Non-Fiction category and The Herald Nelson Mandela University Citizens of the Year Award in the Arts, Culture and Heritage category.
