Henri Kuiper was born in 1924 in Colenso. He served as a fighter pilot with the RAF in the North African and Italian campaigns of WWII. After the war he studied law in Johannesburg, was admitted to the Bar and served as an advocate for several years before becoming Manager of the Rand Daily Mail/Sunday Times Group. After launching the Financial Mail, he left the newspaper industry to become a merchant banker at City Bank and then Director of several blue chip companies, including Standard Bank. At the age of 47, he moved to the Elgin Valley in the Overberg, where he had bought an apple farm called Bergendal. He went on to own several other farms, including the Lomond Wine Farm near Gansbaai and a citrus farm in the Theewaterskloof district. When he retired to Hermanus he launched the NPO, the Enlighten Education Trust, with the aim of ‘improving the quality of teaching, learning and life in the Overstrand’.
