May-Eliane de Lencquesaing was born in 1925 into one of Bordeaux's oldest wine families. In 1978 she inherited the vineyard of Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac and rebuilt the reputation of the estate’s wines. In 2003, at the age of seventy-eight, she moved to South Africa, bought a fruit farm, and created Glenelly Estate in Stellenbosch, where she now makes Cape wines.
In 2011, she was promoted by the French government from Chevalier to Officer in the Legion of Honour. She has also been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Bacchus Society of America (2005) and the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Wine Challenge (2017)
