A fictionalised account of the young adult years of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke (1871-1939). Born in Ramokgopa in Polokwane, she received a missionary education at Edwards Memorial School in the Eastern Cape in the early 1880s. After moving to Kimberley in 1885, she taught indigenous languages to expatriates and basic English to African miners. In 1894, while on a tour with her church choir, she received a scholarship to study at Wilberforce University in Ohio. She graduated with a BSc in 1901, becoming South Africa's first black woman graduate.
