Biography of South African game ranger Peter Hitchins (1940-2019), known for his fieldwork on Black rhino. Hitchins joined the Natal Parks Board in 1961 and started working at Hluhluwe Game Reserve. One of the founding members of the Game Rangers' Association of Africa, he later joined the kaNgwane Parks Board and as a senior warden (1987-1993) was responsible for developing the Songimvelo Game Reserve. Between 1995 - 2002 he worked on the private island of Cousins in the Seychelles, setting up a sea turtle monitoring programme and restoring the natural vegetation. He went on to manage a game ranch in South Africa before retiring in 2005.

Includes chapters written by Peter Hitchins, extracts from his diaries, and contributions by the compilers.
