Clinical psychologist Dr Shahieda Jansen is the Acting Regional Director of Unisa’s Western Cape Region. Before joining Unisa she was the manager of Student Counselling Services at the University of the Western Cape, where she initiated a culture and practice of group psychotherapy. This led to purposeful recruitment of male students as men’s group participants, and intentional fluency in male-focused or masculinised psychotherapy.
In 2010 she expanded the men’s groups to her private practice adding father-son consultations, and later captured the emotional experiences of participants of all-male psychotherapy groups in her PhD thesis. In this book she outlines the model of masculinised psychotherapy that has evolved over several years of persistently adapting the therapy so that it is relevant to the cultural practices and behavioural norms of local boys and men.
