While nursing local influenza victims in Grahamstown during the 1918 influenza pandemic, Josephine Wood met a British nurse, Miss Comber, who wanted to establish religious study groups for the blind. In 1919 Josie Wood established a small library in her home with 100 braille volumes given to her by Miss Comber, who had been recalled to England. Today the South African Library for the Blind has branches across South Africa.
