A history of slavery in the district of Stellenbosch, founded in 1679. Slavery, which played an integral role in the economic and social development of the community, was abolished on 1 December 1834.

Heese discusses the unique genealogical lineage of the Stellenbosch slaves and the origin of the Coloured community, research based on original documents from the Cape Archive which can be read on the accompanying CD.

Historian Hans Heese (1945-2024) was a researcher at the Institute for Historical Research at the University of the Western Cape. He is the author of Groep sonder Grense and Reg en Onreg.
