In 1904, the Herero and Nama people of South-West Africa rose up against the German colonisers in a war of rebellion. An extermination order issued by General Lothar von Trotha that followed resulted in the deaths of about 75 percent of the Herero population.

Gerhardus Pool was born in 1941 and grew up in Otjiwarongo in Namibia. He later taught history at UNISA, the University of Pretoria and the University of Stellenbosch. He is the author of Pionierspoorweë in Duits-Suidewes-Afrika, 1897-1913 as well as a biography of Herero leader Samuel Maharero.
