726 pp., maps, illus., paperback, Revised Edition, Johannesburg, 2013

The second edition of the third volume in the multivolume documentary history of the struggle to end racial discrimination and achieve democracy in South Africa, revised and updated by Gail Gerhart. The series begins in 1882 and combines narrative with a wealth of primary source materials. In the original edition of this volume, published in 1977, Thomas Karis and Gwendolen Carter are named as the editors.

"The second edition of 'From Protest to Challenge' is different in several ways from the first. The three oldest documentary volumes have been reorganised into conventional chapters to make them more user-friendly. All the documentary volumes now contain maps and photographs, as well as more comprehensive indexes than those in the original series." from the preface

"[From Protest to Challenge] has acquired a sound scholarly reputation. As a matter of fact, it has recently been stated that the project was 'largely responsible for the creation of the academic field of black resistance politics in South Africa' and that it has established 'the framework for the narration of South African resistance history, with its own chronology, periodization and constitutive codes'" Albert Grundlingh

Gail Gerhart has taught political science at the University of Nairobi, the University of Botswana, the American University of Cairo, Columbia University, and the University of the Witwatersrand, where she was a Fulbright Visiting Professor in 1994. She is the author of "Black Power in South Africa: the evolution of an ideology" and co-author, with Thomas Karis, of volumes 3-5 of "From Protest to Challenge". She is the editor of the second edition of the series.

Thomas Karis is currently Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the City College, City University of New York. He is an author of volumes 2,3,4 and 5 of "From Protest to Challenge".
