Includes a new introduction by Raymond Suttner.
Raymond Suttner (b. 1945) was actively involved in the liberation struggle against apartheid and was jailed for his activities as an ANC underground operative. He served 11 years in prison and under house arrest between 1975-1983 and 1986-1990. A leading figure in the African National Congress, the South African Communist Party and the United Democratic Front, he broke with these organisations over his disagreement with the direction taken after Jacob Zuma came to power. He is a part-time professor at Rhodes University and an Emeritus Professor at the University of South Africa. He is the author of The ANC Underground and Recovering Democracy in South Africa, and lives in Johannesburg.
"Raymond Suttner is one of small number of white comrades who played a substantial role in bringing apartheid to an end. His book should be read by all who are interested in South Africa." Walter Sisulu
"Raymond Suttner's Inside Apartheid's Prison is one of the most important documents of political struggle and imprisonment yet to emerge among the increasing number of apartheid memoirs. It sets itself apart from most other work within the genre by its candid vulnerability and Suttner's willingness to address the enormous human and personal costs of opposing the apartheid state." Professor Fran Buntman, author of Robben Island and Prisoner Resistance to Apartheid
