Raymond Suttner (b. 1945) was actively involved in the liberation struggle against apartheid and was jailed for his activities as an ANC underground operative. He served 11 years in prison and under house arrest between 1975-1983 and 1986-1990. A leading figure in the African National Congress, the South African Communist Party and the United Democratic Front, he broke with these organisations over his disagreement with the direction taken after Jacob Zuma came to power. He is a part-time professor at Rhodes University and an Emeritus Professor at the University of South Africa. He is the author of The ANC Underground and Recovering Democracy in South Africa, and lives in Johannesburg.
