Former, soldier and statesman Paul Kruger (b. 1825) was President of the South African Republic (later known as the Transvaal) from 1883 until he was delegated to Europe after the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War in October 1899. He lived in Holland until the end of the war in May 1902. He died in Switzerland in July 1904.

Professor Johannes Stephanus Bergh was Chairperson of the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies at the University of Pretoria from 1985-2011.
