Part two in the social history series, Imperiale Somer: Suid-Afrika tussen oorlog en Unie, 1902-1910, an overview of life in the four South African colonies during the Edwardian period. The series focuses on influential personalities and leaders, important social events, the build-up to unification and the impact the 1913 Land Act had on the lives of black people. This volume covers the end of the Anglo-Boer War and the policy of reconstruction implemented by Lord Milner.

Karel Schoeman (1939-2017) was a Research Fellow in both the Department of History and the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch, German and French at the University of the Free State. In his lifetime Schoeman wrote 20 novels as well as many historical and autobiographical works, in both English and Afrikaans. He was awarded the Hertzog Prize, CNA Prize, Old Mutual Prize, W.A. Hofmeyr Prize, M-Net Prize and the Recht Malan Prize. Other honours include the State President Award: Order for Excellent Service (1999) and a Lifetime Achievement by the South African Literature Awards for his complete oeuvre (2006).
