Essays written by five MA and PhD students at the University of Basel. In a university seminar entitled "Photography & History in Southern Africa", the students engaged with the Ernst and Ruth Dammann collection, housed in the Basler Afrika Bibliographien in Basel. The archival collection consists of over 8000 images, 750 audio recordings and numerous manuscripts, diaries and notes made in the early 1950s when the Dammans conducted research on Namibian oral literatures and languages.
