Herman Giliomee is currently a research fellow in the Department  of History at the University of Stellenbosch. From 1982 to 1998 he was Professor of Political Studies at the University of Cape Town. His books include The Shaping of South African Society, From Apartheid to Nation-Building and The Awkward Embrace: one-party domination and democracy in industrialising countries.
