Introduction by Jurgen Schadeberg. Preface by Justice Albie Sachs.

Jurgen Schadeberg was born in Berlin in 1931. In 1950 he immigrated to South Africa and became Chief Photographer, Picture Editor and Art Director for Drum magazine. He covered many significant events: the 1952 Defiance Campaign, the 1958 Treason Trial, the Sophiatown forced removals and the funerals following the Sharpeville massacre. He left for London in 1964, after his work was made increasingly difficult by arrests and harassment by the police. He returned to South Africa in 1985 but left again in 2007 and settled in Spain. He died in 2020.
