This second volume covers South African history from the discovery of gold in the Witwatersrand to the first democratic elections in 1994. The different chapters are written by leading historians, including Saul Dubow, Stanley Trapido, Shula Marks, Bill Freund, Philip Bonner, Deborah Posel, Tom Lodge and Tlhalo Raditlhalo.

Robert Ross is Professor of History at Leiden University in the Netherlands. His books include A Concise History of South Africa, Status and Respectability in the Cape Colony: a tragedy of manners and The Borders of Race in Colonial South Africa: the Kat River settlement, 1829-1856.

Anne Kelk Mager works at the University of Cape Town. She is the author of Gender and the Making of a South African Bantustan: a social history of the Ciskei, 1945-1959 and Beer, Sociability and Masculinity in South Africa.

Bill Nasson taught economic history and history at the University of Cape Town for many years before moving to Stellenbosch University where he is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of History. His books include The War for South Africa" Britannia's Empire" South Africa at War, 1939-1945 and WWI and the People of South Africa.
