Bruno Werz on the wrecking of the VOC ship, the Nieuw Haarlem or Haarlem,  in Table Bay on 25 March 1647 and the experiences of the 62 survivors who spent almost a year living at the Cape before they were rescued.

Dr Bruno Werz is a Dutch maritime archaeologist and historian who lives and works in South Africa. His projects include underwater excavations of the VOC ships, Oosterland and Waddinxveen in Table Bay, a survey of sunken ships around Robben Island, and the excavation of sub-Saharan Africa's earliest shipwreck near Oranjemund, Namibia. He is currently research co-operator for the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies, University of Pretoria, and CEO of the African Institute for Marine and Underwater Research, Exploration and Education. His is a member of the Royal Society of South Africa and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
