Karin Mitchell on the Boeremag, a far-right white Afrikaner separatist militia. The group plotted a coup, and in 2002 detonated eight bombs in Soweto.
Mitchell covers the investigation led by Superintendent Tollie Vreugdenburg, the arrest of 23 men who were charged with high treason, and the trial at the Palace of Justice in Pretoria that lasted 11 years. In October 2013, Mike du Toit, ringleader of a plot to assassinate Nelson Mandela and expel Black people from South Africa, was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Twenty other members were sentenced to prison terms of between five and 35 years.
Journalist Karin Mitchell covered the Boeremag trial, and since then has covered the Marikana Massacre and the Oscar Pistorius trial. In 2016 she left journalism to pursue a full-time writing career.
