In 1991 Ismail Mahomed (1931-2020) was made a permanent judge of the Supreme Court of South Africa. In 1994 he was appointed to the Constitutional Court and in 1998 was made Chief Justice, a position he held until his death. He was posthumously awarded the Order of the Baobab (Gold) in 2002.
