Winner of Best Graphic Novel and the Grand Prize at the 2017 Cairo Comix Festival.
Originally published in Egypt as a trilogy of graphic novels in 2017, 2019 and 2021. The English translation of the collected volume of all three novels was first published in the USA in 2022 as Shubeik Lubeik.
This graphic novel was originally published in Arabic, so it is read from right to left.
Shubeik Lubeik is a fairytale rhyme that means 'our wish in my command' in Arabic. Set in a fantastical Cairo where wishes are for sale, the novel tells the story of Aziza, Nour, and Shokry, each struggling to make their most deeply held desire come true.
Author, illustrator, and translator Deena Mohamed is a Muslim, feminist comic book artist living in Cairo. When she was 18 her webcomic, Qahera, about a hijab-clad superhero, went viral. When not working on her own comics she does freelance illustrations for local and international clients such as Viacom, Google, UN Women, Harrassmap and Mada Masr.
