When educationalist Robert Birley (1903-1982) retired as Head Master of Eton in 1963, he travelled to South Africa as Visiting Professor of Education at the University of the Witwatersrand (1964 to 1967). Jonty Driver, then President of NUSAS, met with him and they became friends.
