Written the 1970s and 1980s, three of the essays focus on the work of H.L.A. Hart, Professor of Jurisprudence at Oxford University from 1952 to 1968. Also includes Blackman's inaugural lecture as Professor of Commercial Law at the University of Cape Town, delivered in 1985.

Professor Michael Blackman (1939-2004) was a Fellow of the University of Cape Town. He was a professor at both UCT from 1984 until his death, and at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg. He is the author of the LAWSA volumes on Companies (in Law of South Africa) and co-author of Henochsberg on the Companies Act, 1987 and Companies Act: Commentary.
