In the 2002 Currie Cup final against the Golden Lions, Hougaard broke Nass Botha's 15 year record for points scored in a Currie Cup final by scoring 26 points which earned him the name 'Liefling van Loftus' (Sweetheart of Loftus Versfeld Stadium). He first played for the Springbok team at the 2003 Rugby World Cup. However, a series of injuries forced him to retire from the game. In the last years he has struggled with an addiction to prescription medication.
