Manila and Haire challenge the portrayal of Sol Plaatje as an "impeccable English gentleman" and argue that while Plaatje "wore the outer trappings of Englishness and Westernization, he bore the inner sensibilities of a Motswana and African."

Journalist and writer Sol Plaatje (1876-1932) was one of the founders of the ANC, a leading spokesperson for black opinion, and the author of Mafeking Diary, Native Life in South Africa and Mhudi.

D.S. Matjila is Associate Professor in the Department of African Languages at UNISA.

Karen Haire is an associate professor, Multidisciplinary Faculty at Principia College, USA and a research fellow at UNISA.

Haire and Matjila translated and co-edited Lover of His People: A biography of Sol T. Plaatje by S.M. Molema, a legacy project, requested by the Sol Plaatje Educational Trust in Kimberley.
