In 1958 Uche Okeke and Demas Nwoko and nine other artists from the Nigerian College of Arts, Sciences and Technology in Zaria formed the Zaria Art Society. This paved the way for Okeke and Nwoko. together with writers such as Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka and Ulli Beier to found the Mbari Artists and Writers Society in Ibadan in 1961. The pan-African network established by these writers and artists collapsed when the Nigerian Civil War broke out in 1967.
