History of the community that first settled at Indaleni near Richmond before moving to Edendale outside Pietermaritzburg. Initially an independent mission under James Allison, Edendale was the first African community in Natal to experiment with freehold tenure.

Sheila Meintjes taught Political Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand for 30 years. She is Honorary Research Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies at Wits, and Visiting Professor at the Institute for Women and Gender Studies, Carl von Ossietzky University, Oldenburg, Germany. She is co-editor of The Aftermath: Women in post-conflict transformation and editor of Women Writing Africa: The southern region.
