This guide provides a general survey of wildflowers found and photographed in close proximity to Rhodes Village in the Eastern Cape Drakensberg. Most of the other flowers featured have been documented on the Rhodes Commonage and in neighbouring valleys, including Kloppershoek, Carlisle’s Hoek, and Maartenshoek, as well as, to a lesser extent, along the waysides on the lower reaches of Naudesnek Pass.

Each plant description includes its taxonomy, historical background, horticultural appeal, and, where applicable, its medicinal and cultural significance.

Brendan Cole is an academic art historian living in Rhodes Village in the Cape Drakensberg. For over a decade he has explored the region extensively, photographing, researching and documenting its many hundreds of local species.
