Mabuse Mampane (b. 1945) left his home in rural Sekhukhuneland when he was 8-years-old to work as a herd-boy in a neighbouring village. In 1963, he left South Africa to undergo military training as a member of Umkhonto we Sizwe. He spent 27 years in exile, working in Oliver Tambo's security detail in Zambia, as ANC Chief Representative in Tanzania and Chief Representative in Zimbabwe. He led the ANC security section in the CODESA talks and served as South African Ambassador to Angola, Sudan and Swaziland.
