Lebona Mosia was born in 1952 in Alexandra township. Active in the June 1976 student protests, he went into exile in August 1976 and joined the ANC and MK in Swaziland. He spent time in ANC military camps in Angola and studied in the former East Germany, Ghana and the UK. On his return to South Africa in 1991 he taught political science at Rhodes University, where he was Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1996 to 1999. He later headed up the Journalism Department at the Tshwane University of Technology before leaving academia in 2002 to join the public service where he remained until his retirement.
