South African artist Dr Esther Nostokana Nagiyana Nikwambi Mahlangu (b. 1935, Middelburg, Mpumalanga) is known for having reimagined her visual heritage and the design principles of the Ndebele nation - as taught by her mother and grandmother and historically used for decorating houses - in painted media such as canvas and other forms. In 1991 she became the first woman artist and African to paint a BMW Art Car, and since then she has collaborated with South African Airways, Smithsonian Museum, Eytys, Belvedere Vodka, Rolls-Royce, and many others.
"Esther Mahlangu's art is a symphony of colors and traditions, weaving together a narrative that transcends borders and generations. Her upcoming book is a treasure trove, unlocking the secrets of her creative process and inviting readers into her rich cultural tapestry. I'm beyond excited for more people to delve into Esther's world, where each brushstroke is a testament to her unparalleled talent and the power of art to unite us all" John Legend, singer-songwriter
"Esther Mahlangu continues to bring light and joy to the world through her colorful patterns that evoke ancient motifs while still generating innovative and contemporary images that mark her position as one of Africa’s most important living artists. This book sheds new light on her work, and will hopefully serve as a salve to the world’s current chaos" Eric Shiner, President, Powerhouse Arts
