Biography of Bulelani Ngcuka, the first National Director of Public Prosecutions in South Africa (1998-2004).

Bulelani Ngcuka was born in 1954 in the Eastern Cape. From 1994 to 1997 he was the ANC's Chief Whip in the Senate and in 1997 he was elected Permanent Deputy Chair of the National Council of Provinces. He was instrumental in establishing the National Prosecuting Authority, the Asset Forfeiture Unit, the Scorpions, and other mechanisms to tackle crime and corruption. His decision in 2003 not to prosecute then Deputy President Jacob Zuma is a decision he still stands by. He resigned as NDPP in 2004.
