She was an associate of the Institute for the Study of English in Africa, worked as a part-time teacher on the MA in creative writing at Rhodes University, and edited the New Coin poetry journal. Born in Pretoria in 1956, she grew up in KwaZulu-Natal, and currently lives in Devon, UK.
