The guerilla campaign in Portuguese Guinea (now Guiné-Bissau), led by Amilcar Cabral and his African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), began in January 1963. On 24th September 1974 the PAIGC guerrillas declared independence.

War correspondent, documentary filmmaker and author Al J. Venter served as an African and Middle East correspondent for various publications in the stable of Britain's Jane's Information Group.
