The guerilla campaign in Portuguese Guinea (now Guiné-Bissau), led by Amilcar Cabral and his African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), began in January 1963. On 24th September 1974 the PAIGC guerrillas declared independence.
