Marlise Joubert was born in Elim in Limpopo. She worked as a librarian at various institutions, including the Universities of Stellebosch and the Witwatersrand. She also worked as a journalist for Beeld and the SABC, and founded the weekly poetry website, Versindaba.

Her first poetry collection, 'n Boot in die woestyn, was published in 1970. Her 2019 collection, groundwater, won a SALA Prize for poetry in Afrikaans. She has also written short stories, three novels, and a number of plays for radio.
