Ebrahim Ebrahim (1937-2021) was a founding member of Umkhonto weSizwe and played a central role in directing the 1960s sabotage campaign. Convicted for this, he was imprisoned on Robben Island in 1964 where he helped create the 'University of Robben Island'. After his release in 1979 he operated in the ANC underground and was abducted from Swaziland in December 1986 by apartheid agents. Tortured, charged with treason and sentenced to another 20 years on Robben island, he was released in February 1991. After 1994 he worked as a mediator in Palestine and Israel, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Nepal, Bolivia, Kosovo and Burundi. He served as South Africa's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs between 2009 and 2015.
