Robert Walter (Mike) Bowen (1887-1948) was blinded by shrapnel in World War I. He graduated from Cambridge University with a law degree in 1921 and qualified as a barrister in London. Eleanor (Lil) Gillies worked in the rehabilitation facility for blinded soldiers and was assigned to work with Bowen. They married in 1919. On returning to South Africa in 1922 he practiced as an advocate in Cape Town and was elected as Member of Parliament for the Cape Town (Central) constituency in the General Election of 1929. He was a founder member of the South African National Council for the Blind and one of the founders of the Athlone School for the Blind.
