Jean Meiring is a practising advocate at the Johannesburg Bar and taught law at Oxford and Cambridge. In 2001 he was awarded the Kenneth Tynan Prize for his theatre reviews. Over the years he has contributed articles, reviews and other commentary to a wide range of media in South Africa. His essays and columns have been awarded ATKV-Mediaveertjie prizes four times, and he has won the kykNET/ Rapport Review Prize four times. In 2021 he was awarded the SALA Prize for literary journalism. He is also the author of the play Sout (2002).
