Allen Grootboom was born in the Langkloof and moved with his family to Middelburg in the Eastern Cape due to land dispossession. He worked as a school psychologist in the Northern Cape for over 20 years. He also served as a member of the Northern Cape Legislature and a member of parliament for the Democratic Alliance. He now lives in Klein Brak River.
