Stephen Ellis was the Desmond Tutu Professor in the Faculty of Social Science at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and a senior researcher at the Africa Studiecentrum in Leiden. In 1997-1998 he worked as a researcher for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
