A history of Tongaat, a town in KwaZulu-Natal established in 1945. In 2010 the name was officially changed to oThongathi.

Tongaat Hulett, one of the largest sugar producers in Africa, has its headquarters just outside the town. The first indentured Indian labourers settled here in 1860 to work in the sugar-cane plantations.

Tholsi Mudly was born and grew up on a sugar estate in Tongaat owned by the Saunders family.
