UK-based freelance journalist Erick Kabendera on his experiences of kidnap, imprisonment and attempted assassination in his native Tanzania under the leadership of John Magufuli, President of the country from 2015-2021.

Erick Kabendera is a PhD Candidate with the African Leadership Centre and a member of the War Crimes Research Group at King's College London. He also works as a senior researcher and advisor for an international cross-border counterterrorism project in Africa. Previously he worked as an investigative journalist and consultant on political and regional security, primarily in East and Central Africa, covered conflicts and politics for The East African, and contributed to the Economist Intelligence Unit, The Guardian, and The Times.
