In his memoir Lungisani Mjaji discusses how perseverance, resilience, and a refusal to be defined by the harsh realities of the poverty into which he was born helped him overcome adversity. He went on to graduate with a diploma in commercial photography from the Tshwane University of Technology.

Lungisani Mjaji grew up in the village of Nongidi in KwaZulu-Natal. A SASMA 2025 Award winner and 2022 Global landscape forum Africa photo competition winner, he is the founding director at Innovative Photography. He also shot and directed a short film called The Float, selected for screening at IMAX in 2026.
