In this collection of essays historian Charles van Onselen explores the mining enterprise on the Rand and the social, political and economic changes that accompanied industrialisation and urbanisation in the years leading up to the First World War.

Charles van Onselen is the author of The Seed is Mine, the life of Kas Maine, a South African sharecropper 1894-1985 (Alan Paton Award), The Small Matter of a Horse, The Fox and the Flies, Masked Riders and The Night Trains. He has held visiting fellowships at Cambridge, Harvard, Oxford and Yale universities and been Research Fellow in the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship at the University of Pretoria for the past two decades.
