Xhosa prophet, Christian convert and evangelist Ntsikana (1780-1821) composed several enduring hymns including “Intsimbi” (Ntsikana’s Bell), “Dalibom (Life-Creator), “Ingoma engqukuva” (Round Hymn) and “Ulo Thixomkulu” (“Thou Great God” - the Great Hymn). 

Dr Janet Hodgson lectured in Religious Studies at the University of Cape Town before moving to the UK in 1987, where she worked as a mission theologian. Now retired, she lives in Somerset West. She is the author of Black Womanism in South Africa, Princess Emma Sandile.
