Sikose Mji became involved in the ANC underground as a high school student in the mid-1970s, attracting the attention of the Special Branch. In 1976 she left South Africa to join the ANC community in exile, eventually training as an Umkhonto we Sizwe combatant in Angola. Later she studied at the University of Zambia and Massey University in New Zealand, before returning to South Africa in 1990. She went on serve as Director: International Relations in the Department of Communications and then as Amabassador in Warsaw (2001-2005), Cotonou (2008-2012), and Lusaka (2015-2018). Now retired, she lives in Pretoria.
