Orania, a white separatist town in the Northern Cape Province, was founded by a group of Afrikaners in 1991 in an effort to preserve their identity, language and culture. Lokato Mokwena visited Orania on two occasions and interviewed six residents in an attempt to better understand the reason for the town's continued existence.

Lokato Mokwena holds a PhD in Linguistics and is currently an Associate Editor for Language Matters and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics at the University of South Africa. She is a co-editor of The Routledge Handbook of Language and the Global South/s and producer of the documentary The Broken String.
