Poet and literary critic Professor Harry Garuba (1958-2020) was born in Akure, Nigeria. He was the nominal leader of the Thursday Group, a gathering of poets that emerged from the Poetry Club, University of Ibadan, during the 1980s and 1990s. He taught in the Department of English at the University of Ibadan from 1981 to 1998, when he relocated to South Africa to teach in the Department of English at the University of Zululand. In 2001, he moved to the Department of English and African studies at the University of Cape Town, where he was appointed professor in 2018. He is the author of the poetry collection Animist Chants and Memorials.
