Novel set in Nigeria. Nnu Ego is unable to conceive in her first marriage and is banished to Lagos where she succeeds in becoming a mother, before being abandoned by her husband and her people.

Buchi Emecheta was born in Nigeria in 1944. She moved to London in 1962. Her novels include The Slave Girl, The Family, Bride Price Destination Biafra and Double Yoke. Following her success as an author, Emecheta travelled widely as a visiting professor and lecturer. She died in 2017.
